Countless ships have foundered in the storms of Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America. A bleak headland on Isla Hornos, part the Chilean archipelago Tierra del Fuego, Cape Horn marks the separation between the South Atlantic and South Pacific oceans. “Kaap Hoorn” was named by Dutch explorers for their homeland city of Hoorn.

Spanish sailors translated it “Cabo de Hornos.” The geography and atmospheric abnormalities of the archipelago contribute to its unpredictable, often ferocious weather. Antarctic icebergs seasonally make the waters even more treacherous. Before the opening of the Panama and Suez canals, voyages between Atlantic ports and the Orient were epics around the southern tips of the South American (Cape Horn) or African (Cape of Good Hope) continents.

They typically took several months. Cape Horn was the most feared of the two passages during the 16th-18th centuries. It became especially notorious from the 1840s to the 1890s, when fast clipper ships competed for record times in the tea trade and cumbersome packets transported passengers and commerce to and from western U.S. seaports. Calm conditions can transform into a gale within hours. Countless sailing vessels, into the modern era, have been sunk or heavily damaged. Even clipper ships sometimes struggled for days to claw past the terrible cape.

The need to round the Horn diminished sharply after 1914, with the opening of the Panama Canal. Sea chanteys and ballads about Cape Horn have been sung for more than 200 years. Recording artist Gordon Lightfoot penned and sang “Ghosts of Cape Horn” for a 1980 television documentary of the same title. Historians, scientists and poets have written of the legendary landmark. Cabo de Hornos National Park, established by the Chilean government in 1945, is the most southerly national park in the world. It is home to many oceanic wildlife species and features treeless peat bog terrain. Piramide Hill rises to 406 meters on Cape Horn. A Chilean naval station is nearby, where an albatross sculpture memorializes victims of the stormy cape.

Today, fair-weather adventurers book passage on sailing and cruise ship excursions “’round the Horn” and among the fjords of Tierra del Fuego. Rowers investigate the rugged archipelago close-up. Helicopter charters provide aerial views. To many yachters, conquering Cape Horn is a lifelong goal, much like summiting Mt. Everest is to climbers. Even when the sea is peaceful, the ominous grey mass reminds of the thousands of mariners who have perished in these waters.

If you do decide to visit Boston then you will find a city alive with passion and so many things to do that boredom is out of the question.

In Boston, history is all around. It is one of America’s oldest cities but it still retains a very European feel. It is best to explore Boston on foot, this way you will get to see it from the perspective of a local.

The local cuisine is worth the visit alone. Food ranges from fresh seafood to Italian and there are restaurants everywhere.

It is advisable to buy some Red Sox tickets and to go and see a game. The atmosphere inside the stadium is electric and it is no wonder that people who visit Boston carry on supporting the Red Sox long after their visit.

Taking some comfortable walking shoes is highly recommended. This way you will be able to walk down The Freedom Trail, a tour of the Historic sites of Boston that is guided by a red line painted onto the sidewalk. Experiencing all of the history and culture this will present is a must during a visit.

Visiting Boston is one thing to make sure you do whilst travelling America, go and you won’t be sorry you did.

Travelling does not require a large portion of your savings. There are ways to reward yourself with a vacation without depleting your hard earned money that you’ve been keeping away for the rainy days. All you need to possess is your knack for planning and a lot of internet savvy. Travelling on a budget is not a problem if you have these virtues.

Start planning at least three months ahead of time. Most airlines offer lower plane fare if you book in advance. Take time comparing the prices and perks of each airline flying to your chosen destination. The internet will make this very easy for you. Online booking is also much cheaper.

You can also search the net for hotels and resorts that will offer lower prices if booked in advance, especially so during off-season. If your one to go for adventure, search for maps and other reference relating to your travel destination. Then once there, scour the place instead for the cheapest hotel or motel. There are some that hasn’t advertised online yet.

Online bidding sites can also help you with your other travel essentials. You can buy a second hand but durable luggage at half a price on those sites. Familiarize yourself with the prices of the place’s basic commodity. This way you will know what to bring with you, and what you can travel without.

Technology is a wonderful gift. Travelling on a budget would not have been as easy without the information that you can readily access over the internet. Good planning is the only thing you need to reward yourself a vacation without disabling you economically.

I have long wanted to visit the town of Lares in Peru so I quickly accepted when I was invited by some friends of mine. Lares is a small city around 5 hours drive away from Cusco. I have read many times about the thermal baths that the city holds and their mystical healing powers. being an old romantic I have always wanted to see if there was any truth in these old tales, so I packed and off I went.

Traveling to the city of Lares is an adventure in itself. You have to travel through rural Peru and you get to see what life in Peru is really like. Seeing the clothes and houses for yourself in all their close up detail is very inspiring. Sadly though, you also get to see the poverty that people have to endure in this part of the world.

We had to pass through what is known as the Sacred Valley and then begin the almost never ending climb towards Lares. We neared Lares as it began to get dark and we erected our tents. The warm baths looked inviting and we stripped off as soon as we could and got in.

It was lovely to be in this remote part of the world, sat in the sacred baths with the stars above. After we had dried ourselves off, we sat around and told each other scary stories until we all fell asleep.

I recommend the trip to Lares to anyone, it is an exciting and enthralling way to visit real Peruvian history.
